How to Clean AC Filter at Home in 7 Easy Steps

how to clean AC filter.

Cleaning your AC filter is the one AC maintenance task you can and should do yourself. It takes about 10 minutes, costs nothing, improves cooling noticeably, and extends the life of your AC. In Lahore’s dusty environment, we recommend doing this every 3 to 4 weeks during summer.

Many people avoid it because they are not sure how to do it without damaging anything. This guide walks through the process simply and clearly.

Why Learning How to Clean AC Filter Matters

The air filter sits just inside the front panel of your indoor AC unit. It traps dust, pet hair, and airborne particles before they reach the evaporator coil. As it fills with dust, it restricts airflow — which means your AC has to work harder to pull air through, uses more electricity, cools less effectively, and can cause the coil to ice over.

A clean filter means better cooling, lower electricity consumption, and less wear on the compressor. It is the simplest and highest-return maintenance task any AC owner can do.

What you will need

  • A step stool or ladder if your indoor unit is mounted high
  • A soft brush or dry cloth
  • Running water (a tap or shower head)
  • A dry towel
  • 15 minutes of your time

Step 1 — Turn off the AC

Turn off the AC at the remote and then switch off the MCB (circuit breaker) for the AC at your distribution board. Never work on the unit with power on.

Step 2 — Open the front panel

Most indoor AC units have a front panel that lifts up or clips open. Hold both sides of the panel and lift it upward gently — it usually pivots open and stays in the raised position. Some models have small clips on the sides that you press inward while lifting.

Do not force it. If it does not open easily, check the sides and bottom for clips or tabs.

Step 3 — Remove the filter

The filter is a grey or white mesh panel that sits just inside the front panel, over the evaporator coil. It usually slides out from the top or unhooks from small tabs. On most split ACs there are two filter panels, one on the left and one on the right.

Slide them out gently. Note how they were positioned so you can replace them correctly.

Step 4 — Check the filter condition

Hold the filter up to a light source. If you can see light through the mesh clearly, it is not too dirty. If the mesh appears grey, dense, or the holes are visibly blocked — it needs cleaning.

If the filter is extremely blocked and has not been cleaned in many months, you may see visible dust matting on the surface.

Step 5 — Clean the filter

Take the filter to a sink or bathroom. Hold it under running water — the water should flow through the mesh from back to front (the same direction that air flows through it during operation). This pushes the accumulated dust out rather than driving it deeper into the mesh.

For stubborn dust or grime, use a very soft brush (an old toothbrush works well) to gently scrub the mesh under running water. Do not use stiff brushes or apply heavy pressure — the mesh fibres can deform if scrubbed too hard.

Do not use soap or detergent unless the filter has an oily residue from kitchen fumes. Plain water is sufficient for normal dust.

Step 6 — Dry the filter completely

Shake off excess water and lay the filter flat on a dry towel in a shaded spot. Do not put it back into the AC unit while it is still wet — moisture on the filter reduces airflow and can promote mould growth inside the unit.

Allow at least 30 to 45 minutes of drying time before reinstalling. In Lahore’s summer heat, a filter dries quickly if laid in a spot with good airflow.

Step 7 — Reinstall the filter and close the panel

Slide the dried filter back into position, making sure it sits flat and the edges are properly seated in the tracks. Close the front panel gently until it clicks into place. Switch the MCB back on and turn the AC on. Check that airflow feels stronger than it did before cleaning.

How often should you do this in Lahore?

  • During summer (April to October): every 3 to 4 weeks.
  • During winter (November to March): every 6 to 8 weeks.
  • After a dust storm: the next day.
  • What filter cleaning cannot do

Cleaning the filter handles dust on the filter mesh — but it does not clean the evaporator coil behind it. Over time, fine particles pass through the filter and coat the coil. Coil cleaning requires a professional service with the proper cleaning solution and tools.

We recommend a professional general service every 3 to 4 months during summer, and a deep clean once a year in March before summer begins.
